Outstanding Growth in Tourism Industry Performance Continues in 2014

4 Months show highest ever figures in Island history!

SAINT LUCIA (September 5, 2014) The Saint Lucia Tourist Board continues to revel in significant growth in visitor arrivals recorded for the island in the first seven months of the year.
Touting an incredible accomplishment, SLTB officials say total stay over arrivals (by air and ferry) at the end of July 2014, have surpassed all numbers previously recorded in the island’s history.  At 208,117, visitor arrivals are 7% higher than the same period last year – a difference of more than 13,000 arrivals.
To further emphasize the significance of this year’s performance, increases were recorded every month thus far, with July recording both the highest percentage (13%) as well as actual growth (3672).  In addition, the figures recorded in the months of February, March, April and June, were the highest number of arrivals ever recorded in these respective months in the island’s history.
The expansion of the sector is fuelled by growth in particular markets, namely the US and UK, the island’s two largest markets, which increased by 14% and 8% respectively, during the seven month period.  Growth was also experienced in the Canadian and European markets, both of which increased by double digit percentages over last year.

Director of Tourism Louis Lewis acknowledged the boost in the sector and attributed its growth to the strategic marketing efforts targeted at key sectors of the source markets, most notably being the airlift expansion strategy and fostering closer relationships with the travel trade.  “The outstanding performance recorded this year is testimony to the work that the Tourist Board engages in to market the destination, and can be translated into a greater awareness of the destination in our key source markets.  We are very pleased to announce the sector’s performance for the year thus far.”

The success also extends into the Cruise and Yachting sectors, which also recorded major increases in the last seven months.  The island recorded a 5% increase in cruise arrivals stemming from the 14% increase in calls, whilst arrivals by yacht increased 16% over the same time period.

According to Lewis, “with such an impressive start, the Saint Lucia Tourist Board is projecting a similar if not better performance throughout the balance of the year, especially considering the increasing airlift in the upcoming winter season from both the US and Canadian markets.”

Saint Lucia is getting ready for welcoming even more visitors to its shores via yet another flight from US carrier Jet Blue airlines. The direct flight from Boston, USA to Hewanorra International airport is scheduled to begin November 1, 2014.

Shakespeare Globe Theatre’s “Hamlet” is on for Summer of the Arts Tuesday 9th September 2014

With the successful 2013 showings of “King Lear” as a marker, Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre of London will once more stage an epic Shakespearian tragedy, this year bringing “Hamlet,” to Saint Lucia. Slated for Tuesday September 9th, 2014 at the Gaiety on Rodney Bay, the production will be staged for one night only.  Partnering with the Shakespeare Globe Theatre again this year, is the Cultural Development Foundation, in association with the Saint Lucia Tourist Board.
With a mandate to promote an international experience and an understanding of the works of William Shakespeare through education and performance, Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre’s international Hamlet tour is unprecedented, as it is being staged in every country in the world this year.
This coincides with the Government’s own recent Arts emphasis and the strengthened development thrust of the Cultural Development Foundation.  In that regard, a second visit by the renowned theatre company supports CDF’s goal of creating a sustainable “Summer of the Arts” season in Saint Lucia.
The Chairman of the Cultural Development Foundation, Mr. Petrus Compton said, “CDF’s investment in training has been heavily focused on theatre. We have been working steadily to brand the summer months as our season of the Arts. Having just concluded a number of    workshops which culminated with their own productions, the Globe’s visit is intended to close the 2014 season.  It is our hope that as our season gains momentum, so will the visibility of Saint Lucia thespians.”
Saint Lucia Tourist Board Director Louis Lewis expressed the agency’s pleasure at the CDF’s initiative “in forging the kind of partnerships that are very strategic to reinforcing the cultural and artistic personality of Saint Lucia”. According to the Director, while the Tourist Board’s work is to market the brand along differentiated lines, it is through the work of partners on the ground that this is delivered.

The Shakespeare Globe Theatre’s one night only engagement of “Hamlet” will take place on Tuesday September 9th from 7:30 pm at the Gaiety on Rodney Bay. Tickets cost $80 EC and are available from Splendour Gifts in the Gablewoods Mall and The Cell outlets at Baywalk, Bridge Street, Chisel Street, and Clark Street in Vieux Fort.

Government Of Saint Lucia Provides More Details on the Cruise Ship Employment Programme 2014

MORE DETAILS ON CRUISE SHIP EMPLOYMENT PROGRAMME

The Government of Saint Lucia has provided more details on the Cruise Ship Employment Programme.  Since the announcement of this programme in the 2014/2015 Budget Statement, many unemployed youth from across the island have expressed a desire to take advantage of this opportunity.

On Tuesday, June 2, 2014, officials from the Office of the Prime Minister and the Saint Lucia Development Bank were guests on INSIDE GOVERNMENT on RSL 97, where the details of this new initiative were discussed. Permanent Secretary in the Office of the Prime Minister, Dr. Alison Plummer, says the success of the pilot phase was the driving force behind the expansion of this programme.  According to Dr. Plummer,

"Last year, 220 persons benefited from training, assistance and employment as a result of collaboration between NICE, Springboard Training and Development and the St Lucia Development Bank.  Springboard Training and Development Centre has entered into an agreement to train and recruit employees from Saint Lucia to fill non-utility positions on Carnival Cruise Lines.  Having recognized the inability of many of the potential employees to meet the costs associated with taking up these jobs, Springboard approached the Government and this relationship was developed.  Carnival Cruises recognizes the accreditation of this training institute and has expressed satisfaction with employees recruited in the pilot phase last year. As such, Government will make $3 million dollars available for on-lending by the St Lucia Development Bank, so more people can benefit.”

The Permanent Secretary explained that the programme targets unemployed youth between the ages of 18 and 35 and no employment experience or prior training is necessary.  However, those wishing to gain employment must pass the certification training course offered by Springboard.  After the training and certification, students will be required to undertake a medical screening where they would undergo drug testing and other basic assessment. Upon certification, students would then access the financial assistance to acquire their visas and to meet the cost of travel to Miami to begin their jobs on cruise ships.
The Business Development and Marketing Manager of the Saint Lucia Development Bank, Mr. Philbert Francis, says he is pleased that the Government of Saint Lucia will expand the program.  He indicated that the loan amount which is usually in the vicinity of $5,000.00 covers the training, medical, visa and one way travel costs and is granted to successful candidates who have been referred by the training institute.  In order to minimize delinquency, loans are to be repaid via salary deductions, within the first six months of employment.

The public is urged to contact the Springboard Training and Development Institute at 450-0198 or the Saint Lucia Development Bank at 456-7352 for more information.

Recruitment for training begins on June 9, 2014.

National Volunteer Programme Speaks Out Against The Killing Of Turtles In Saint Lucia

On Saturday 17th May 2014, Volunteers made their way to the Grande Anse beach for a clean-up excursion.  Before and after this exercise, reports were eminating from some of the island’s renowned turtle nesting areas, of the brutal killing of our sea turtles along the shores of our Island.

We are saddened to see the manner in which poachers uncaringly treat the turtles we depend on so heavily to promote our country as an environmentally friendly and beautiful destination. They seem to have no regard for the implications of their actions on the island's ecology and its reputation.

Our office would like to appeal to our society to stand against the savage hunting and killing of turtles on the beaches of Saint Lucia.  It’s quite disheartening to witness a leather back lying dead (slaughtered like minced meat) while trying to lay her eggs. We all need to take a united stance to eradicate such action!.

Please STOP KILLINGS OUR TURTLES…

We are appealing to all Saint Lucians to STOP BUYING turtles eggs and meat also…

According to the National Volunteer Programme Coordinator Mr. Cyril Saltibus, Sea turtles in our Caribbean water are in danger of being driven to extinction from fisheries bycatch, and also during open hunting season. Let us not do any more damage on our shores. As a member of the Saint Lucia National Trust it makes our job more worrisome; we advocate strongly against this, BUT – the slaughter continues.  The survival of each adult is critical to their continued existence!” It will take a collective and united effort of all Saint Lucians to help fight the battle. Let us all VOLUNTEER to put and end to this. We can only pray to GOD for continued guidance…

The Government of Saint Lucia has announced a three million dollar “Cruise Sector Training and Employment Programme” to provide access to funding for approximately 550 young Saint Lucians, seeking employment in the cruise sector. This programme is an expansion of a $400,000.00 pilot version which was introduced under the NICE programme in the last fiscal year.

Over the past year, approximately 229 unemployed Saint Lucians got job offers, 35 percent of which, benefited from the pilot financing facility set up with the Saint Lucia Development Bank (SLDB). As such, the Government of Saint Lucia has partnered with a training institute, a cruise line and the SLDB, to expand the facility and provide more opportunities to unemployed youth. This year, three million dollars will be obtained from the National Insurance Corporation for on-lending to prospective employees through the SLDB.

In his 2014/2015 Budget Statement, Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Kenny D. Anthony announced,

“Mr. Speaker, it is no secret that the many cruise ships that we see berthing at our ports each week employ thousands with well-paying jobs. However, the problem has always been with the inability of Saint Lucians to access these jobs because of the costs associated with meeting the requisite qualifications and other requirements.

We know all too well the unsuccessful, costly attempts made by Government in the past to provide support to local candidates to access these jobs. However, through NICE, the Government of Saint Lucia launched a pilot programme valued at $400,000 during the past fiscal period to assist unemployed youth between the ages 19 and 35 years to access this employment. Unlike other similar initiatives in the past, this pilot programme has been carefully designed in conjunction with a training institution, a cruise line and the Saint Lucia Development Bank. The programme is specifically targeted for non-utility job opportunities within the Cruise Sector. With these types of jobs, Mr. Speaker, successful candidates can earn as much as, and in some cases, in excess of US$3,000 per month.

Mindful of the unfortunate tradition of delinquency in servicing education and training loans, the Government will introduce stringent repayment conditionS to ensure that these loans are repaid within a six month period, to allow for the continuation of the programme.

More financing agencies have expressed interest in developing similar facilities. Information on this opportunity will be made public once the details have been finalized.
